~Sleep...Sweet Sleep~

The worst thing in the world is to
try to sleep and not to.

~F. Scott Fitzgerald

Now, I do not consider myself a princess...perhaps a queen? Just kidding! However, I do require and expect certain things...food, a roof over my head, clothing....SLEEP!
Why does it elude me night after night?
I've bought the finest high-thread count sheets,
down comforters, featherbeds,
a pillow-top mattress...$$$,
but do I catch any Z's? NO!

I will admit that I stay up too late into the night, but, if I were to slip into bed at a decent hour, I would just lie there, my mind churning over the day's activities and anticipating what will be tomorrow. In the morn, my back aches from tossing and turning, my blue eyes are red-tinged and swollen. Perhaps my love snores? No matter, my ears are oblivious to the sawing - I wear earplugs to bed. So what could the problem be? I cannot shut my mind off once the moon shows it's light. I count sheep - yes, I have done that
and I've counted back from one hundred.

Could I be a creature of the night, coming to life while the world around me slumbers? I think so and I think cat-napping while the sun shines could be my lot in life. But, who can do that?!
No answers - just an endless chase for one perfect night's sleep.

A flock of sheep that leisurely pass by
One after one; the sound of rain, and bees
Murmuring; the fall of rivers, winds and seas,
Smooth fields, white sheets of water,
and pure sky -
I've thought of all by turns,
and still I lie
Sleepless...

~William Wordsworth, "To Sleep"

Life is too short to sleep on
low thread-count sheets.

I used to be able to sleep no matter what, but in recent years I've had a sleep struggle too. Keeping a book on the corner of my bed helps me. If I can't sleep, I begin to read. Reading gets my mind off of whatever WAS whirling around in there and USUALLY I fall asleep. Sometimes I have to read A LOT to get there - - - other times only a sentence or two.

If I awaken in the middle of the night, I read myself back to sleep again.

One thing I heard a long time ago that brings me SOME comfort - - - if, on such sleepless nights, you resist the urge to get up and do things, you will get a large percentage of the REST that you would have gotten sleeping - - - just by remaining still and resting.

Good luck my friend!!!! Keep on TRYING.

Oh, and let me know if the tall pile of mattress thing works!!! ;-)

Hey Deborah!

I'm in the same sleep boat as you! I'm so exhausted that I had the doc to do some blood work to see if I had something wrong. Nothing wrong with the blood work! Great news but I'm exhausted. It is 9:30 a.m. right now and I want to go back to sleep!!! I can hardly keep my eyes open but at 10 I have to drive a half hour to pick up my preschooler! Thank God this is the last week of school!!!!

I will check back to see if someone gives you a solution to both of our sleeping problems. By the way my doc did want to send me to a sleep specialist but I decided not to because I don't wake up not being able to breath.

The book thing wouldn't work for me as I'm not much of a book reader. I'm a blog reader! lol

I have noticed that when it is a full moon I can't sleep at all! I have had to put a black blanket over my curtains to keep the light out of my room and I live in the country, no lights around at all other than the moon!

Hugs,
Angela

When I can't sleep, I will put on 'smooth jazz' music - but the volume has to be very low - otherwise it will cause my mind to jump to attention as I listen to it. The smooth mellow sound is soothing, but it has to be turned down very low! And, taking one motrin helps too - makes me sleepy! Sometimes, a peppermint candy will help one to sleep more soundly- I think that's why hotels put one on your pillow at turn-down time!

Yes, you do need a sleep study. Unfortunately, your inability to sleep may be an indication of a more serious health problem. A sleep study will answer that question. My husband has had two sleep studies and his results were very important to his health. As for me, I use Ambien, but am headed for my own sleep study!

I don't sleep either. I guess it comes with the territory of getting older. I have always read to get sleepy, but I hate to disturb my husband by turning the light on. Sometimes I use a booklight. I do have a glass of wine before I go to bed.

BTW, I used to snore like a freight train. This was very embarrising if I were to fall asleep in public. I fell asleep on a train once. When I awoke, the man in the seat in front of me turned around and said, "Boy, do you ever snore!" I was so embarressed.

I was not going to use the C-Pap machine. I had surgery. The doctor removed my uvula. Now I softly purr.

Like you, I have just decided that I am a nocturnal creature and catch a nap when I can. I haven't been able to sleep well since I was a small child. I can't make my mind stop at night. Then, as soon as the sun peeks over the horizon, I'm starting to feel bleary eyed and so sleepy. However, the remainder of the world doesn't work on that schedule. So, I catch a nap here and there and make do. I wish I could give you answers that would help. I know the frustration you live with. I have tried everything...reading, music, just 'lying there' (which totally exhausts me!), having warm milk before bed, OTC sleep aids, anything short of actually taking drugs for sleep, which is something I simply refuse to do. Praying you are able to sleep soon.

Many hugs..........

Diane

Oooooooh how I can relate!! I have always had trouble sleeping and can so identify with the first quote! I think about every Unimportant thing under the sun that I don't even need to! I'm off for the summer so that usually helps...don't have the stress of that awful alarm clock!! If you find a cure, let me know! :-) L~

Oh Deborah, I wish that I could help. Perhaps there is a pea beneath your mattress.

I will toss and turn when there is a lot on my mind. Before I came to Mississippi to be with Phillip, I was only sleeping 5 hours a night. That was after waking up after 2 or 3 hours and taking another hour to get back to sleep. It was horrible. The past three nights since I have been in MS, I have slept like a baby.

Well well...we have yet more in common. You know I can't sleep either. I was always a very light sleeper but after the kids, it got worse.
Menopause did me in. it runs in my moms side of the family.
So when I can't sleep I think of you ; )

Hey Deborah!

I think I have discovered my sleep problems from an email that I received with a WARNING about a prescription that I am currently taking. Singular can cause insomnia and some kind of a dream state where you just don't get the sleep that you need!

I am on night 3 without taking it and I am sooooo much better in the day time. Not so much at night since it is midnight and I am writing this to you! lol

So, my best advice right now would be to do a google check with every prescription that you take. What I did was on my searches is side effects of Singular and I found a web site where people write in and tell all of the different things they are experiencing while taking it. If you are currently on Singular let me know and I'll forward you the email that I was sent.

Have fun on your vacation in Virginia!!! We are getting ready to go to Canaan Valley. We are sooo excited and can't wait to get there!

Hugs,
Angela

After 20 years of getting up every hour and a 1/2 to urinate, I am now able to sleep for 6 hours without waking. This has changed my Life. Thanks to Zolpidem.
